Why visit a City Park?

Here are my 3 top reasons to visit a city park.

Firstly, these parks provide a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in nature’s tranquillity. Whether it’s taking a leisurely stroll along winding pathways or finding a peaceful spot to relax, such parks offer respite from the hustle of a city break.

Secondly, city parks boast stunning landscapes, with lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and majestic trees that create a picturesque setting. This natural beauty not only provides a feast for the eyes but also offers a refreshing breath of fresh air. Bliss!

Thirdly, they are so accessible! Active adventures can be found right in the middle of the city. Almost no planning required. Win!

Here are my six of the best.

San Francisco: Golden Gate Park

Headed to the West Coast to check out Alcatraz, Fisherman’s Wharf and the cable cars? Need an escape from the busy streets? Look no further than Golden Gate Park.

This iconic park offers a plethora of active activities that will surely get your adrenaline pumping. How about starting your day with a refreshing jog or bike ride along the park’s scenic trails? If you’re feeling adventurous, try your hand at rollerblading or skateboarding in the designated areas.

For a more leisurely yet still active experience, aim for the Japanese Tea Garden. Here you can immerse yourself in the tranquillity of traditional Japanese landscaping. One of the standout areas within the park, complete with serene ponds and meticulously pruned trees. Why not join one of the yoga or tai chi classes on offer?

The Shakespeare Garden is a slightly lesser known hidden gem within the park, featuring an array of plants mentioned in the works of the famous playwright. As you explore, keep an eye out for the various statues and plaques that pay homage to Shakespeare’s iconic characters and plays. ‘Wherefore art thou Romeo?’, literally…

If you’re a frisbee enthusiast, this city park offers that too! Head to the meadow near the Music Concourse, which offers plenty of open space and a beautiful backdrop of the park’s iconic architecture. A popular spot for frisbee action with friends and family.

Golden Gate Park truly has something for everyone when it comes to staying active and having a blast!

New York: Prospect Park

Here’s one I ‘accidentally’ found recently, whilst hunting for coffee shops (a favourite hobby of mine!) during my own New York city break.

This city park in New York has so much to offer. I guarantee you’ll never run out of active activities to enjoy in Prospect Park!

I discovered a fantastic network of walking routes during my own visit. Whether you prefer a more secluded walk or a lively atmosphere, Prospect Park has something for everyone looking to stretch their legs and enjoy the outdoors. A great area for walking is the Peninsula, offering stunning views of the lake and plenty of benches to sit and take in the scenery (with your coffee!).

Want to get the legs pumping whilst experiencing the joy of cruising along the serene waters of Prospect Park? Rent a pedal boat! If you’re searching for a place to hire from, there are a few options available to you. Check out the boathouse located within the park itself, as they often offer pedal boat rentals for visitors looking to explore the lake.

If you’re up for a challenge, there is a designated area for rock climbing located by the parks southern entrance. This popular climbing spot offers a variety of challenging routes suitable for climbers of all skill levels. With its natural rock formations and breath-taking views, you’ll feel like you’re conquering the world as you ascend to new heights.

St Louis: Forest Park

And now for a real hidden gem! This place was voted as the best city park in all of America in 2023.

From the stunning landscapes to the diverse wildlife, there is something for everyone to enjoy at Forest Park in St. Louis. This park offers wide range of activities, from gentle family friendly strolls to exhilarating active options (which could also be family friendly, depending on your family!).

Starting at the gentler end of the scale. Immerse yourself in lush greenery by embarking on an invigorating hike along the scenic trails, where you can discover the beauty of the surrounding flowers. As you wander, keep an eye out for unique plant species like the elusive lady’s slipper orchid or the fragrant wild rose. Can you find one?!

For those seeking a more adrenaline-pumping experience, try your hand at mountain biking through the rugged terrain, navigating through twists and turns will get your heart racing. One of my close friends is a mountain bike instructor, he’s currently trying to convince me to head here with him! It gets his vote!

Another option for the adventurous types. There are several thrilling zip-lining adventures on offer. Soar through the treetops and take in breath-taking views of the park from above. The Go Ape location is a one of the best places to start, it offers various zip lining courses to suit your skill level. Check it out!

Whether you prefer a leisurely stroll or an action-packed adventure, Forest Park has something to offer for everyone. In my opinion, a worthy winner of its best city park in America award!

Chicago: Grant Park

As a former resident of ‘The Windy City’, I have been to Grant Park many, many times. Located on the shores of the Lake Michigan, I was always a big fan of the cooling breeze that blows off the lake on those hot Chicago summer days.

On the subject of the lake, try out paddleboarding! One popular location is the beautiful Monroe Harbor. Here you can launch your paddleboard and explore the calm (normally!) waters of Lake Michigan. If the lake is not sufficiently calm on the day of your visit, head over to the peaceful lagoons in the park, such as the Cancer Survivors’ Garden Lagoon or the North Rose Garden Lagoon. Here you can paddleboard amidst more tranquil surroundings.

This city park is known as the best spot in town for skateboarding enthusiasts. They flock to this iconic park to showcase their skills and tricks in an energetic atmosphere. Why not join them? With its smooth pavement and spacious layout, Grant Park provides the perfect setting for skaters of all levels to practice. If you’re keen to learn, head to the Grant Skate Park where there are a few options – GoSkate has a good reputation.

After a more chill experience? Take a leisurely bike ride along the lakefront path, they go on for ages – it’s a big park! Maybe stop off and get involved in a game of beach volleyball if you’re feeling brave – they are always looking for volunteers to join!

Whichever active adventure you choose, get ready for an unforgettable adventure in the ever lovely Grant Park!

Los Angeles: Griffith Park

Of all the cities on this list, Los Angeles is the one I most often find myself in need of a break from when visiting. It’s just so hectic and sprawling!

The great news is that Los Angeles boasts some of the most beautiful city parks in the country. All offer visitors a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. My favourite is the world famous Griffith Park.

This iconic city park, with its stunning views of the city and the Hollywood Sign, is a beauty! Want to feel like you earned those views? Take on the ever popular Griffith Observatory hike, on completion you can enjoy those breath-taking views of the city. Fear not, other (less hilly!) hikes are available. There is a whole network of scenic trails to explore.

On my own recent trip there, I hired a bike and cycled the road up from the city to the Observatory. It’s 2.5 miles of uphill goodness. For the cycling geeks – the average gradient is 4.9% and there is a total elevation gain of 626 ft, finishing at 1,130 ft.

I made to the top, the view in Griffith Park is ace!

For something a little different, try some horseback riding through the park’s beautiful and extensive equestrian trails. A good place to start is at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, a one-of-a-kind venue nestled in the heart of Griffith Park that offers rides for all abilities.

For those who might be keen to avoid hills (and horses!), head to the Botanical Gardens. Explore the diverse plant life and beautiful landscapes by taking a leisurely stroll through the various themed gardens. Highlights include the rose garden and the succulent garden, guided tours are available. Learn from knowledgeable experts about the history of the gardens and the different plant species. You can maybe even pick up some gardening tips and tricks!

So many options. Griffith Park is the perfect city park destination for active individuals looking to escape the LA sprawl.

Miami: Oleta River State Park

Had enough of Ocean Drive? Change gear completely and head to the mangrove swamps and lush forests of Oleta River State Park.

This city park is located on the northern side of town. It feels a world away from the hectic streets of downtown Miami. The park is one of the largest urban parks in South Florida, with plenty of outdoor activities on offer.

With water lying in most directions, rent a kayak or paddleboard. This city park offers some incredible paddling spots. With its pristine waters and breath-taking scenery, it’s a paradise for paddling enthusiasts. Spend the day exploring the calm waters of Biscayne Bay. Or instead paddle through mangrove tunnels to discover hidden coves and sandy beaches. Your call!

If you’d rather dive straight into the crystal-clear water, bring your swimsuit and jump in! Whether you prefer to take a refreshing dip in the calm river or explore the park’s hidden swimming holes, there’s something for everyone. The park’s diverse ecosystem provides a unique swimming experience, where you can swim alongside vibrant fish and other aquatic creatures. The whole park is shaped by the coast, so the beach options are almost endless.

For those seeking a bit more ‘water based’ adrenaline, you can try jet skiing or wakeboarding in the park’s designated areas.
